Who did the work?

Architect
Our architect, Gil Schalom, specialises in low energy, sustainable build and refurbishment design, and has experience of getting existing homes towards the "passive house" end of the scale.
He treated his own house - a Victorian semi - to a low energy refurb back in the late 1990's, when it was the first radical refurb of this kind in the UK.

Air tightness and insulation champion
Overseeing these parts of the project fell to me (Tina Holt).
Keeping an eye on continuity of insulation is essential in any ultra-low energy refurb or new build. It is just a case of "mind the gap" - being observant, and sticking to your guns when gaps are spotted to make sure they are filled correctly with insulation.
As our builders did not have the patience for air tightness tapes and membranes, the easiest thing was for me to do that work myself during the evenings when no-one else was on site.

Builder
McCane Construction carried out the building work, liaising closely with architect, specialist external wall insulation contractor and us as hands-on clients.

Insulation contractor
For the external wall insulation, we used Westville Ltd.. An excellent end result was achieved, and on a project like this, it is down to close collaboration with other trades. In our case, we as clients were closely involved to ensure that all aspects of the project were brought together.

PV Panels
These were installed by Carbon Legacy Ltd. while the scaffolding was still up (after work on the roof and external wall insulation was complete).
